I finally got the chance to experience the beauty that is the Tunica Hills Wildlife Management Area. Located near St. Francisville, Louisian, a little over an hour away from Baton Rouge, the area provides camp grounds, cabins for rent, and a winding hiking trail strewn with waterfalls and crystal clear streams. If you're ever in search of a place to get away for the day, Tunica Hills is simply perfect. As long you're willing to sacrifice cell phone service burn a few extra calories, you're all set!

Suggestions for the Trip

  • Bring Plenty of Water! Even if you're visiting during the cooler months, remember you will be HIKING. Stay hydrated and alert.
  • Dress Comfortably! No, that doesn't mean go to Academy Sports and spend a whole check on heavy duty hiking equipment. Dress like you're preparing for a long workout with comfortable shoes. The terrain is very uneven so make sure whatever shoes you choose have a good grip. But if you're one of the many brave souls who want to take nature head on, by all means, throw your shoes in your bag and just go barefoot!
  • Bring Your Camera! Take tons and tons and tons of pictures! Enough said.
  • Snacks! When are snacks ever not a good idea? Fruit, granola bars, or sandwiches can fit perfectly inside your back pack. Remember though, you're in the woods. Try not to bring too many things that will leave trash or wrappers behind. There aren't very many trash cans along the trail.
  • Insect Repellent! This one is pretty much a no brainer. Although it isn't unbearable, mosquitos are just as vicious out here as anywhere else. Don't let them ruin your trip. If you're going to have a lot of skin exposed, spray yourself BEFORE you start the trail.
  • ENJOY YOURSELF! If it's your first time, make sure you find a map and pick the trail that suits your energy level. You don't want to get stuck on a 4 mile trail when you can really only hike 2. Go with a group, and drop a pin  wherever you park the car.
