COSMO | Review - The End of the F***king World

“It was like he was missing parts.”

If there were ever a more socially dysfunctional Bonnie & Clyde-esque duo in the world of Superbad meets Criminals Minds, Alyssa & James are definitely top tier competition.

James, an awkward, skinny, and emotionally unavailable high schooler has for the past 11 years, had a problem feeling, well, anything. After a traumatic childhood experience, he grows up a very numb boy, who eventually finds solace in killing small animals and the occasional self mutilation. He soon decides that it’s time to move on to something “bigger” and selects his first human victim during a regular lunch shift at school. Alyssa, already bursting at the seams with her own toxicity, finds James as the perfect push over, whom she can make her “boyfriend” in a weird world where everyone is fighting to fit in and be the same. It doesn’t take long to find out that “same” isn’t exactly Alyssa’s forte, and James realizes that killing her is going to be a lot harder than first imagined.

At the surface, they have absolutely nothing in common but their delicate balance of insecurities, inhibitions, and James’ always equivocal “Yes” to her every whim, makes them almost adorable enough to forget that they are wanted murderers, car thieves, and soon to be the most wanted in town. The pair hope to make it to Alyssa’s dad, Leslie, a shining renegade in her eyes who turns out to be a useless drunk, actively dodging a separate estranged child. The journey is crazy to say the least, but along the way they share with the audience the lesson on what made them the self proclaimed psychopath and unapologetic rebel Cinderella they’ve turned out to be.

Welcome to The End of the F***ckng World.
